I have always been a bit obsessed with ghosts and spirits. I’m the one who reads the books, falls down the research rabbit holes, and watches every documentary. Old houses, hotels, haunted streets, the stories people talk about at dinner parties- I’m in.

I always thought that if a ghost ever wanted to say hello, I’d be the perfect person to say hello back. Then one night in Savannah, Georgia (USA), something did.

I learned that loving the idea of ghosts and feeling a hand on your shoulder in t the middle of the night are two very different things.

Alone in Savannah, Middle of the Night

I was there for work. Nothing glamorous, a long day, a downtown hotel, a room to myself, and the kind of tired where you’re asleep before you settle on a TV channel.

I was alone. I want to be clear about that, because it matters for what comes next. I’m a side sleeper. That night, I was curled up on my left side under the covers.

Sometime in the middle of the night, I woke up because a hand pressed down on my upper shoulder. It wasn’t a brush, a draft, or the sheet shifting. It was a hand: firm, deliberate, the way someone wakes you when they need you up now.

For a second, my brain did what brains do. It tried to make it normal. Someone’s waking me up. Then the rest of it caught up. Wait. I was in a hotel room. By myself.

By. Myself. I was by myself. I sat straight up, and the moment I did, the feeling was gone. Not slowly. Just gone.

Every Light in the Room

I did what I imagine most people would do, ghost lover or not. I turned on every light I could reach.

Then I searched the room. Really searched it, every place a person could possibly be. That’s how real it was. I wasn’t checking to calm myself down. I honestly expected to find someone. I was pretty freaked out. What if I found someone?!

There was nothing. No one. Just a quiet hotel room, lit up like a stage, and me standing in the middle of it.

Eventually I got back into bed and tried to go back to sleep with every light still on, including the television. Nothing else happened that night. I convinced myself it was a friendly ghost or spirit - maybe my mom or dad coming to say hello. But whoever, whatever it was, it was real. Really real.

A City Where Spirits Live

If you know Savannah, Georgia, you’re probably nodding right now.

Savannah has a reputation as one of America’s most haunted cities. Walk those squares under the live oaks and Spanish moss, and it’s easy to believe the past never fully packed up and left. It just got quieter.

I’d heard the stories long before that trip. I’d loved them, the way you love a good book. I just never expected to end up as one of them.

What I Know Now

I can’t tell you for sure what woke me up that night. What I can tell you is that it was real. Really, really real. Not a dream I half-remember or a story that got better with each telling. It was a firm hand on my shoulder in a room where no one else was, and I will never forget it. It is as real today as it was the night it happened.

I still love ghost stories. Maybe more than ever. I read, listen, and watch them a little differently now. I don’t hope they are true. I know they are. I feel it.
